About Torre Diagonal 00 Telefonica Tower

Housing its main tenant, Telefónica España, the building is located by the sea at the origin of Barcelona’s main thoroughfare, Diagonal Avenue. The building takes the linearity of the street on the perimeter as the generator of its form creating a trapezoidal prism—sharp and stylized.

On the inner part of the façade, a series of very slender [16x16 cm (6x6 in) above the 13th floor, 16x32 cm (6x12.6 in) below] steel pillars 135 cm (53 in) apart carry the vertical loads and generate a screen to help diffuse light. An exterior rhomboidal lattice structure made of 24x68 cm (9.4x26.7 in) steel pipes supports all torsion and horizontal loads. The exterior lattice is not only a key structural element, but casts deep shadows on the façade thus reducing solar radiation. Vertical bands of white ceramic painted pattern cover 25% of the curtain wall. The style of the patterned bands was inspired by the salted spray that comes from the nearby sea. Visually the bands emphasize the slender form while further helping to control sunlight.
