A grain terminal is being transformed into a hotel and residential building in Collingwood. Originally constructued in 1929, it was used to store Canada's grain...
The silos of the Collingwood Grain Terminals were built over 30 consecutive days beginning on May 25, 1929. During this period, concrete was poured continuously 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. A total of 40 men built the terminals at a cost of $800,000 with the two towers rising above the silos completed later. At completion, the terminal contained 126 silos capable of storing two million bushels of grain. The terminal became active in September 1929 with a steamship named Minesing delivering 275,000 bushels of corn from Chicago.
The last railcars were filled for shipment from the terminal in 1986 and the terminal remained in private ownership until 1997 when the property was purchased by the Town of Collingwood.
