A large entrance hall and atrium nearly 83 meters (270 feet) high lies at the heart of this building. This “open architecture” concept makes it possible to see what people are doing in their daily jobs and creates a wide range of opportunities for the creative exchange of ideas and information. The atrium links the two L-shaped high-rises in plan, which face each other. With its connecting walkways, conference boxes, glass elevators, staircases, and bridges, the atrium is the identity-defining space in the new headquarters. All the office units look out not only outdoors, but also on this central hall.
Primary energy consumption is below 150 kWh/m2 annually, achieved by such means as two in-house bio-gas combined heat and power plants (which cover 60% of electricity requirements and the bulk of the building’s heating requirements), a high-efficiency heat recovery system, and intelligent building automation for sun protection and lighting.
