Originally abandoned after surviving two large earthquakes in 1985 and 2017, the 18-story building was finally renovated and the structural deficiencies addressed. Strategies like excavating and adding new pilings to rectify a significant tilt and reinforcing the structure with steel bracing and dampers to reduce earthquake impact, making the building safe again for re-habitation. This revitalization project prioritized sustainability with significant energy, lighting, HVAC, and water savings, alongside a reduction in embodied carbon through structure recycling.
