The field of structural engineering comprises the dimensioning, structural design and analysis of load-carrying structures for buildings, bridges and other structures of the built environment. Central issues include the load-carrying capacity, stability, function and durability of these structures. We work with the entire design process, from conceptual design through detail design and construction aspects, to assessment and strengthening of existing structures. We work with traditional structural materials such as steel, timber and reinforced concrete, as well as new materials such as fibre reinforced polymers and fibre reinforced concrete.
In our research we develop advanced analysis methods, which together with experiments in the laboratory lead to a better understanding of the mechanical behaviour of materials, components, connections and entire load-carrying structures. This makes it possible to develop safer and more effective structures to meet the future’s demands for sustainable development, human security and public health.
